DAAD funded project on rainfall-induced landslide hazard assessment in the Colombian Andes

Lupe

Background

Colombia, a tropical country located in the northern corner of South America, provides with the mountainous topography, a strong hydro-climatic variability, an active tectonic regime and complex geology optimal conditions for the evolution of landslides. Additional to these complex natural conditions, during the last decades the population growth and increasing urbanization of areas prone to landslides have increased the hazard and risk conditions.

Our project partner Edier Aristizabal showed in a recent study that in the period from 1900 to 2018 in Colombia more than 30000 landslides were recorded that cost more than 34000 lives (Aristizabal & Sánchez 2020).

The project

In the project, we plan to implement qualitative and quantitative techniques for the task of rainfall-triggered landslide susceptibility and hazard modelling as a basis for land use planning and the implementation of future landslide early warning systems.

The DAAD/Colciencias Programme for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP)

In the Programme for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP), funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Colombian Colciencias, the participants get the chance to visit each other in two subsequent years to work on a joint research project and provide training for both undergraduate and graduate students.

For the year 2021 there are still two spots available for master theses in the frame of the project. Please contact Anika Braun if you are interested.

Our project partners

Partner in this project is the Institute for Geosciences and Environment at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellin under the direction of Edier Aristizabal.
